A few days in Perth

A few weeks ago a coworker and I went to Perth for a busy week of meetings. We accidentally arrived on a public holiday so took the opportunity to stretch our legs and go for a walk.  We went to John Forrest National Park, on the outskirts of a neighbourhood just a few minutes' drive from the airport.  It was funny to see what a national park looks like in the west compared to the beautiful lush national parks I'm used to exploring in the east.  It was very dry and reminded me a lot of Mission Trails in San Diego.  A few minutes along the path we came to a train tunnel and decided to check it out.  We kept walking through the tunnel, getting father away from the outside light and noise.  It didn't look that far from the outside, but the farther in we got, the farther the other side seemed.  It was almost pitch black in the middle, but we kept shuffling our feet along hoping we wouldn't fall.  We finally made it to the other side and read the sign about the tunnel - apparently it was the only rail tunnel in Western Australia until 2004. Weird.

We kept on walking towards what the map said was the site of a train crash.  There wasn't anything to see really except some tress and shrubs, but off in the distance we did see a kangaroo.  We went further to see if there was any water at the National Park Falls, but when we got there found that other than a small pond of stagnant water there was no sign of the falls. The rocks were pretty though, and after the 24 hours of travel I'm sure my coworker needed the stretch.

After the walk we headed back to town via Feral Brewing Company for a quick drink.  We had a tasting paddle, then headed to Scarborough Beach where we enjoyed the sunset before grabbing dinner and calling it a day.

The next few days were jam packed with customer meetings, but in between we got to see a lot of pretty sunsets.  We also got to enjoy Perth's version of decent Mexican food with some other coworkers from San Diego.  For those of us who hadn't had Mexican food in awhile it was decent, but my visiting coworker thought it was pretty bland.  It wasn't the best meal ever, but we've learned that Mexican food in Australia never is and we were just enjoying the fact that is was edible.

The final night of our visit we took some customers out to dinner in Fremantle, about 30 minutes south of Perth.  We arrived just as the sky was putting on an amazing show; it was a nice way to cap off a productive week.
